Each of the concerts in the 2020 online Festival includes some of the greatest quintets in the repertoire – by adding piano or viola to the classic string quartet a whole new world of sound opens up. Schumann’s Piano Quintet became a blueprint for many others to follow including César Franck’s passionate masterpiece (Saturday). Both the quintets on Sunday use the added viola to create a beautifully mellow sound world – Beethoven’s bubbling and expansive work and Dvořák’s sunniest and most bucolic chamber music piece.
