Beethoven called this string quartet ‘serious’!

EVENT ONE 18 September

Beethoven string quartet in F minor, Op. 95

In at the deep end York Chamber Music Festival begins its celebration of Beethoven’s 250th anniversary with the string quartet he himself called ‘serious’! Op. 95 is basically an experimental piece, a musical laboratory, light years ahead of its time in which he tries out all sorts of effects – which 15 years later morphed into his ‘late’, ethereal string quartets, strange music unlike anything heard before. Only 20 minutes long but after the F minor quartet the world would never be the same again. Come and hear how the new world begins from within the deepest imagination of Beethoven.

Howell’s gentle English pastoral quartet could hardly be more different and the great piano quintet of Schumann is also a work of great fantasy. As Steven Isserlis says, ”miracle after miracle”. A concert with Beethoven look forward and Howells and Schumann looking over their shoulders!! Very truly a ‘fantastic’ concert. Join it on:

18 September 7:30pm live stream from National Centre for Early Music, York.
